Nexa September Highlights: Full-Node 2.2.0.0 Released

The biggest highlight in September was the release of the new Nexa Full-Node version, a stepping stone toward the upcoming hard fork and activation of the Tailstorm protocol.

Tailstorm will transform the Nexa blockchain into the first hybrid of a traditional UTXO proof-of-work model and a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). Traditional blocks, now called summary blocks, will be formed on average every 2 minutes, with around 40 subblocks between them, one mined on average every 3 seconds.

Significant developments are ongoing with Nexa’s hardware acceleration, a first-of-its-kind card designed for signature verification. In the third article of the series, we explained the technical details behind the validation engine, and in the upcoming one we will review Blitz and what it is capable of today.

Nexa Full-Node 2.2.0.0: The Final Checkpoint Before The Tailstorm

We’re excited to present Nexa Full-Node 2.2.0.0, an important milestone and the final checkpoint before the upcoming hard fork with the Tailstorm integration and mainnet launch. We urge everyone to update their node clients to the latest version to prepare the network for the next release.

This preparatory release includes the new Tailstorm source code for the major protocol upgrade. Everyone who runs a Nexa Full-Node, whether stand-alone, integrated with a service, or as a wallet back-end: please update your clients.

We always advise you to securely back up your wallet.dat file if you hold any assets on the full-node wallet, especially before installing an upgrade.

Hardware Acceleration: Scaling By Circuit

The second article in this series built Nexa’s validation engine out of six components, a tape, and a head, and watched it settle a payment from Alice to Bob with no software running at all. Because the tape only ever moved forward, the engine ticked the first of the four boxes a better Bitcoin has to check: it was pipelineable.

This article ticks the rest. As Nexa Chief Scientist Dr Peter Rizun showed in Sydney, we can fix Satoshi’s Bitcoin and make it check all those boxes with only three simple changes. Along the way, the engine picks up two more properties, extensibility and compressibility, almost for free.

Tailstorm: Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) Combined With Traditional Blockchain

A proof-of-work system that can confirm your transactions in 3 seconds was, until recently, just a myth. To this day, Bitcoin’s average block time is 10 minutes. What if that could improve 200 times over, letting you watch your transaction get mined in seconds? It would enable a truly global electronic peer-to-peer cash network.

Nexa is actively working in this field, and this is where the Tailstorm Protocol comes in. Beyond improving security and fairness, it also speeds up transactions and introduces subblocks.

On top of Nexa’s 2-minute blocks, Tailstorm will introduce subblocks, in the planned configuration around 40 of them, mined roughly every 3 seconds. These subblocks will benefit from a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) architecture that falls back to the traditional summary blocks.

Monthly Development Updates: August 2026

August brought several key developments, including the work on Nexa Full-Node 2.2.0.0 and progress toward activating the Tailstorm protocol, which will transform Nexa into the first hybrid of a traditional blockchain and a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) model that persists only in RAM.

This novel architecture unlocks subblocks that will be mined on average every 3 seconds. This also means you can see your transactions picked up and mined within the same timeframe. In practice, you won’t need to wait for long block confirmations, and transactions will be mined in seconds.

September marks a shift toward the blockchain’s first hybrid architecture model. This is by far the most important development, and major preparations are complete. Over the next few months, the team will continue to heavily test the protocol and implementation before announcing the actual activation day on the mainnet.

We invite everyone to join Nexa’s network and run a node if you have the technical capability. Existing network participants are advised to update their clients to the most recent release and prepare for the upcoming hard fork and protocol shift.
