Nexa Academy: What is Cryptocurrency?

In a recently published educational article, Nexa Academy explored the emergence of cryptocurrency as a novel monetary instrument over the past decade, a development that continues to reshape how we think about money and payment systems. While names like Bitcoin and Nexa are now part of everyday conversation, the core principles and motivations behind these digital assets remain unfamiliar to many.

The article begins by revisiting the historical evolution of money, from commodity-based exchange, through the rise of fiat currencies, to today’s digital payments. By highlighting the limitations of earlier monetary forms, such as centralization, opacity, and counterparty risk, it establishes a clear rationale for decentralized, cryptographically secured alternatives.

It goes on to explain key characteristics of cryptocurrencies, including distributed ledgers, consensus mechanisms, and cryptographic validation, as well as the benefits that have driven their adoption: transparency, censorship resistance, and programmable scarcity.

The piece also categorizes cryptocurrencies into payment tokens, utility tokens, and asset-backed stablecoins, focusing on their architectures and real-world applications. Importantly, the article avoids overly technical jargon, aiming instead to provide conceptual clarity and practical insight for readers without deep backgrounds in finance or computer science.

By the end, readers come away with a clear definition of cryptocurrency, a foundational understanding of its technological and economic drivers, and a practical taxonomy of token types, all essential tools for anyone navigating the evolving landscape of digital money.

Guide: How to use the Nexa Explorer to see Nexa as Digital Cash in Action

A new guide released this month walks users through the power of Nexa Explorer, a tool that goes beyond standard blockchain tracking by providing coin-level visibility into how transactions work on the Nexa network. For those familiar with cryptocurrencies, blockchain explorers are essential for tracking funds, inspecting on-chain assets, and monitoring network health. Nexa Explorer takes this further by allowing users to see not just wallet balances, but exactly how each individual “coin” moves through Nexa’s UTXO-based ledger.

The guide explains the differences between two primary blockchain models, UTXO (used by Nexa and inherited from Bitcoin) and account-based models like Ethereum’s EVM. While most explorers simply show a running balance, Nexa’s system reveals transaction structure in more detail, including inputs, outputs, and change, offering deeper insight into how digital cash operates at a technical level. Whether you’re new to UTXO models or simply want to enhance your blockchain literacy, this guide is an essential reference for understanding Nexa’s underlying design and practical functionality.

Guide: How To Navigate Nexa Full-Node

The full-node wallet, the very first wallet created for Bitcoin, is a foundational concept in understanding cryptocurrencies and how they operate. At its core, a full-node wallet is a two-in-one application, acting both as a node that helps maintain the network and as a fully functional wallet for managing your funds. It connects directly to the blockchain, the public ledger, giving you full control over how you access and interact with the network. Nexa, derived from the original Bitcoin source code, follows the same model, and so does its full-node wallet. This guide offers a first look into that system, only scratching the surface of what’s truly possible with it.

To start with, download the wallet from the official website:

New Nexa Feature: OP_MERKLEROOT Script Explained

Blockchain applications increasingly demand not only data integrity but also efficient, verifiable interactions with off-chain systems. Nexa’s new OP_MERKLEROOT opcode meets this need by embedding Merkle-proof verification directly into script execution. This innovation bridges on-chain consensus with external verifiable databases, enabling smart contracts to confirm data operations, such as insertions, deletions, and updates, without relying on trusted third parties or consuming excessive resources.

By bringing Merkle-proof logic into the scripting layer, OP_MERKLEROOT transforms how developers design blockchain-backed services. Registries, supply-chain tracking, decentralized identity systems, and any application requiring cryptographic attestations of external state can now leverage a compact and efficient primitive. The result is both higher throughput, as proofs remain logarithmic in size, and stronger security guarantees, since every step of the proof is enforced by the consensus rules themselves.

Nexa Community Event: Create a NiftyArt NFT Collection

The digital art world is abuzz as NiftyArt.cash rolls out its 2.0 upgrade. To celebrate the launch of the upgraded platform, we’re organizing a community event. We invite you to explore the new features, engage with fellow creators, and participate by building a mini NFT collection of 20 items to become eligible for a prize of 250 million Nexa coins.

The competition offers a 250 million Nexa-coin grand prize to the top vote-getter, but there’s a twist. To unlock the full prize pool, the event requires at least ten valid entries. If fewer than ten artists participate, the prize adjusts for fairness, with each valid entry increasing the total prize by 25 million Nexa coins, all awarded to a single winner.
